Project Overview

Children Matters is a non-profit humanitarian organization focusing on ending generational poverty by helping children in need through their sponsorship programs, donations and community centers.

My Role

Website UX design

The Goal

The goal was to design a responsive website that lets users sign up as a volunteer quickly and easily. The website must reflect credibility and transparency with financial information available to view or download.

Target Audience

I conducted user interviews and created empathy maps from the interviews to better understand the needs, behaviour, and motivations of the users I’m designing for. The primary user group I identified through my research was caring and empathetic professionals who want to make a positive impact in
children’s life.

How might we  - starting the design process

During the crazy eights exercise, I played around and sketched our possible design solutions for the Home page, including Hero image, image carousel and embedded video background for the main header section.
I also sketched out the initial wireframes by hand, to encourage rapid iteration.

Wireframes

My digital wireframes reflected user research:
  1. Volunteer option in the navigation bar to help users find what they're looking for quickly and easily
  2. Donation button makes it easy for users to find donation option
  3. Clearly indicated Get involved button direct users how to take action
  4. Volunteer sign up screen with minimal information input for quick application process
  5. Financial information section to increase credibility and transparency of the organization
  6. Thank you screen after sign up with contact information and next steps

Usability study and some challenges

The usability study revealed that the Get Involved button is not large enough for users with visual impairment and the headline text on the volunteer application form isn't clear enough. Once these issues were resolved and some other accessibility considerations were addressed, I created mockups for different screen sizes.

“The website makes it easy for users to sign up as volunteers at Children Matters. The website prominently displays their annual financial information to increase trust and credibility of the organization amongst users and prompt
them to volunteer.

Conclusion and what I learned

Testing the design with someone with low-vision helped me understand the role font size and button size plays in design accessibility.

Next steps

  • Keep up the trends and conduct competitive audits occasionally to ensure that the design of the website is relevant.
  • Test the website to ensure responsiveness across all screen sizes and devices.
